Studio: plan a shoot before it happens

  • NewStudio — your room in 3D, drawn to size with its doors, windows, floor and walls. Drag in lights, modifiers, reflectors, backdrops, people, plants and furniture, and see the picture your camera will take.
  • Newpick your camera body and a lens that fits it; the picture is exposed from aperture, shutter and ISO within that camera's limits, with a light-meter scale and the depth of field. Calibrate it with your own light meter.
  • Newthe sun through your windows for any date, time and place, multiple exposures shot by shot, and 49 lighting set-ups to start from — including studios with several sets and a camera on each.
  • Newa set-up as an A4 PDF — the picture with its settings, the set from above and in isometric with every piece numbered, every setting and a list of what to bring — or as a 4:5 or 9:16 picture for social media.
  • Improvedthe free version says what it includes wherever a limit applies: 36 converted frames, exports up to 2048 px, and a look at Studio with four set-ups.
  • Improvedroom cards, room templates and lighting set-ups show the room in isometric 3D, and the Studio menu is grouped into Plan, Yours and Libraries.
  • Fixedthe trial counts frames restored from a .loupe sidecar and scans swapped under a converted frame; reinstalling no longer resets the count.
  • Fixedthe update window scrolls and keeps its buttons on screen on small displays; Esc closes it. The smallest text in the app is 11 px.

Photo books, sixteen-page zines and tethering for more cameras

  • Newphoto books for print houses — 20 × 20, 30 × 30, 21 × 28, 28 × 21 and 15 × 20 cm, six templates, facing pages on screen, and a PDF with 3 mm bleed. Text is set as pixels at 300 dpi.
  • Newone photo across two facing pages, in books and zines, switched on over the left page of each spread.
  • Newsixteen-page zines from one A4 or A3 sheet, with tall or wide pages, and a drawn step-by-step guide to cutting, folding and gluing.
  • Newtethering for Nikon, Sony, Fujifilm, Panasonic and OM System over USB — untested so far.

Color Grading, a reworked Color Mixer, PDF and .spool files

  • NewColor Grading — a wheel each for highlights, midtones and shadows, with Luminance under each wheel, and Blending and Balance for where the zones meet.
  • Newthe Color Mixer opens By colour — the eight colours as swatches, with Hue, Saturation and Luminance for the one picked — or By property, one property across all eight. A changed colour or property keeps a mark while another is on screen.
  • NewPrint and Publish save every page of a layout, carousel or zine into one PDF. Export ▸ Spool file saves a photo with its conversion, crop and edit, for someone else to open in Spool exactly as you left it. Exports run in the background with a progress bar.
  • Fixedan edit made with the curve and the mixer in quick succession is kept whole in the exported file; JPEG and PDF match the screen and PNG/TIFF; prints with a paper profile no longer get coloured blacks from the printer driver; a curve point is removed with a double-click again.

Record your scanner or camera at work for its report

  • Newon Windows the report can record your scanner or camera at work in its own software. Spool carries the USB recorder (USBPcap), installs it after Windows asks for permission, records after one restart, keeps only that device's traffic and uninstalls the recorder afterwards.
  • Fixedin the light interface the histogram and the tone curve in Lab follow the interface instead of staying black.

One page editor for Print and Publish, test strips and proofs you can print from, scanners and cameras you can add

  • NewPrint and Publish (until now Post) share one page editor. The settings you change most sit on the page itself, above and below it, and follow what you click: background, margins, grid and gap for a page; crop, border and corners for a photo; font, size, colour and alignment for text. Select several boxes and change them together, or switch on Every page together and change the whole layout, post or zine at once.
  • NewTest strips: brightness, warm–cool or black point, in bands of one picture or whole copies, or two tests mixed in one grid, every copy labelled. Crop and turn one band and the whole test follows. Pick the setting that looked right on paper and every later print of that photo gets it.
  • NewProofs at the real size of A4 to 1 × 2 m, several formats on one sheet, each with its dpi and the distance it looks sharp from printed under it.
  • NewZines: the whole sheet in the side panel, and a large preview as printed or as it reads once folded. Print asks for printer and paper first, and is several times faster: photos come from their preview whenever it is large enough.
  • NewRight-click a frame: Print ▸ a single print, a layout, a test strip, a proof or a zine; Publish ▸ any post size or one of your templates.
  • NewAdd your scanner or camera to Spool: a film scanner or a tethering camera that is not on the list sends what it is and what it can do, after you see all of it. The list is on the new Scanners & cameras page.
  • ImprovedExposure works in stops on linear light: +1 doubles the light, as under the enlarger. Lower memory use and faster previews.

Library panel in Lab, several photos per slide, zines

  • NewLab has a left panel with your rolls, folders, cameras, films and dates. Click or drag frames from it without leaving the photo you are editing. Post, Print and Finish have the same panel.
  • NewSeveral photos on one slide: pairs, triptychs, grids and a mosaic. Each photo can be moved, zoomed and rotated inside its cell, or dragged to another cell.
  • NewText on slides: titles, paragraphs and captions in eight font styles. Each slide can have its own layout, background and fonts.
  • NewZines and photo books in Print. A zine prints on one sheet with fold and cut lines. Multiple pages go to the printer as one job.
  • NewBatch editing: a slider changes all selected frames at once, and films and presets apply to the whole selection.
  • ImprovedBetter colour: the engine corrects each colour channel separately in shadows, midtones and highlights, so fewer frames come out with a colour cast.
  • ImprovedContrast uses a soft S-curve that keeps detail in the shadows.
  • FixedCrop stays inside the photo, full resolution always loads, a newly chosen film shows immediately, and scanner frames have clean edges.
